THREE EFFECTIVE WAYS TO
MEASURE THE RESULTS OF YOUR BLOG
Blogging is not easy. It takes commitment, resolve, and creativity. After you’ve gone to the effort to write and post your blog, you think: “Whew! I’m done!”
Not really…
In order to get the most from your blog, measuring its results is a must. Three good ways to measure the results of your blog are briefly discussed below:
Your Web Server Can Provide You with Your Blog Statistics
Your web server maintains a record of every request it receives to deliver Web content. There are several software packages out there that can interpret this raw data and present it in a user-friendly manner. WebTrends is an example of a software package that will help you determine the number of people that have viewed your blog, what pages they’re read, etc.
Measuring Feeds
One way to increase blog readership is to offer a link so people can “subscribe” to your blog. By offering readers a subscription to your blog, readers are able to connect with you on a more regular, frequent, basis, which is a great way to maintain “top of mind” awareness in the minds of potential customers.
By directing subscriptions to your feed through FeedBurner (or similar free service), for example, you can evaluate information on your subscribers in one place. FeedBurner provides the following free services:
1. Publicizes blog content, making it easy for people to subscribe
2. Optimize distribution by correctly formatting the blog’s content. This helps your blog to be picked up by all of the major directories, and it can then be read by subscribers wherever they are
3. Learn how many subscribers you have, what they like best, and where they come from
Search Engine Rankings
Just having a blog on photography, for example, will enable someone searching for photography information to find your blog. Every time someone links to your blog, or just links from a post on another blog, your search engine rankings will increase.
If you want to prove to your boss that the company’s blog is successful, try this: determine how your content is appearing on search engines, and assign a dollar value to those results based on what it would cost to hire a search engine optimization consultant.
The answer may be a pleasant surprise. Happy blogging!
